Graphing the Hitters: Plate Discipline
Last week, I published Graphing the Hitters: Productivity with a focus on OBP and SLG. Today's version of Graphing the Hitters is on Plate Discipline, which I introduced in this format just over a year ago.
The graph below plots walk rate (BB/PA) on the x-axis and strikeout rate (SO/PA) on the y-axis for every qualified batter in 2010. The intersection of the MLB averages for BB% (8.50%) and SO% (18.49%) created quadrants that classify players as better-than-average in both (lower right), worse-than-average in both (upper left), or better-than-average in one and worse-than-average in the other (lower left and upper right).
Unlike Fangraphs, I believe the denominator for strikeout percentage should be plate appearances (rather than at-bats). For whatever reason, Fangraphs defines walk percentage as BB/PA but strikeout percentage as SO/AB. As a result, while the raw numbers were downloaded from Fangraphs, the BB% and SO% were calculated separately.
Note: You can download a spreadsheet containing the BB, SO, BB%, SO%, and BB/SO of the 151 qualified hitters here. This information can also be used to locate the 124 players not labeled in the graph below.

Three of the players in the bottom right quadrant ranked in the top five in OPS last year. Not only did Jose Bautista, Miguel Cabrera, and Albert Pujols produce outstanding on-base and slugging averages but they also displayed strong plate discipline. All three hitters walked at least 60% more than the MLB average while striking out less than the MLB average.
Pujols had the fourth-highest BB% (14.71%) and the 20th-lowest SO% (10.86%). No one else comes close to matching that combination of BB% and SO%. Joe Mauer was 36th in BB% (11.13%) and 7th in SO% (9.08%).
Daric Barton (16.03%), whose name is situated between Bautista and Pujols on the graph above, edged out Prince Fielder (15.97%) for the highest BB% in the majors. A.J. Pierzynski (2.98%) had the lowest BB%.
Mark Reynolds (35.40%) had the highest SO% by a wide margin, beating out Adam Dunn by nearly five percentage points. Reynolds struck out over 200 times for the third straight season. He now holds the top three spots on the all-time single-season list for strikeouts. No other player has ever whiffed 200 times in a campaign. The top nine in SO have all occurred since 2004 with Reynolds (3), Dunn (3), and Ryan Howard (2) manning eight of the nine places. As it relates to Reynolds, if one wants to look for hope and change, he has increased his walks and BB% every year since his rookie season in 2007.
Jeff Keppinger (6.26%) had the lowest SO%, squeezing past Juan Pierre (6.40%) for top honors. He also generated the No. 1 BB/SO ratio with an impressive 1.42. Adam Jones (0.19) had the worst BB/SO. The toolsy center fielder is far from a finished product. By the same token, Carlos Gonzalez, firmly in the top left quadrant with a 6.29% BB and 21.23% SO, may not be the superstar-in-making unless he improves his dismal BB/SO ratio of 0.30. With or without better plate discipline, the 25-year-old outfielder is unlikely to ever approach the rate stats (.363/.412/.679) he put up in the second half last year.
Just five qualified hitters had a BB/SO ratio of 1.0 or better (vs. 13 in 2009). Pujols and Mauer were the only players to repeat.
| Player | BB | SO | BB% | K% | BB/SO |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jeff Keppinger | 51 | 36 | 8.87% | 6.26% | 1.42 |
| Albert Pujols | 103 | 76 | 14.71% | 10.86% | 1.36 |
| Joe Mauer | 65 | 53 | 11.13% | 9.08% | 1.23 |
| Daric Barton | 110 | 102 | 16.03% | 14.87% | 1.08 |
| Chase Utley | 63 | 63 | 12.33% | 12.33% | 1.00 |
Combining the features of the Productivity and Plate Discipline graphs allows us to determine the players who had above-average BB% (> 8.50%), SO% (< 18.49%), OBP (> .325), and SLG (> .403). The 29 hitters in the table below are ranked by OPS.

As I concluded last year with no particular revelation, "Pujols is the most disciplined and productive hitter in the game today." Albert may still be the "most disciplined" hitter but might not be the "most productive" anymore. You see, there is another guy out there who is a lot more like Pujols than not. In fact, this impostor had a higher AVG (.328 vs. .312), OBP (.420 vs. .414), SLG (.622 vs. 596), OPS (1.042 vs. 1.011), OPS+ (179 vs. 173), wOBA (.429 vs. .420), and wRC+ (170 vs. 165) than the three-time NL MVP (who, by the way, also has FOUR second-place finishes). No, it's not Joey Votto. It's none other than Miguel Cabrera, who sits atop the list above.

News and Views: New York Yankees Starting Rotation
The New York Yankees reportedly signed Kevin Millwood to a minor league deal on Friday. The 36-year-old righthander will compete with the 37-year-old Bartolo Colon and the 34-year-old Freddy Garcia for the fifth spot in the team's starting rotation. And let's not forget Mark Prior who hasn't pitched in the major leagues since 2006!
These candidates would make for a nice staff if this were 2003 rather than 2011. I mean, this foursome might even give the Philadelphia Phillies' quartet a run for their money. You see, eight years ago, Colon, Garcia, Millwood, and Prior combined to post a 59-45 record with a 3.71 ERA and 733 SO/256 BB in 876.2 IP when all four starters were in their 20s.
Hey, if it's not 2003, then maybe it is the 1960s as we shouldn't forget that the club is also counting on a first-generation Nova.

Ervin Santana's Inside Pitch
A couple weeks ago Mike Fast posted two graphs showing the average plate location of each pitcher from 2007-2010 to LHBs and RHBs. I thought it was a very cool idea as it offers some insights into how pitchers attack the zone differently. It is particularly interesting to see the outlier pitchers: Derek Lowe has the lowest (ha) pitches, and Livan Hernandez pitches the farthest away to both left-handed and right-handed batters. And without being presented the data I would never have guessed that Ervin Santana throws the farthest inside to left-handed batters of any pitcher. With most pitchers throwing extremely away to lefties I wanted to see what was going on with Santana.
*As a quick side note, I think that these are the raw values straight from gameday and not Mike's corrected values (Mike can correct me if I am wrong). But recently both Mike and Max Marchi described park correction systems to the plate locations they developed. Though take slightly different approaches they seem to get similar results, which is reassuring. Also they both come to the conclusion that for most parks on most days the data are probably off by less than an inch or two, also reassuring. But still I think the correction process is an important one, and I hope to give it some thought soon.*
Turning back to Santana, although he occasionally throws a change up he is largely a two-pitch pitcher throwing his fastball 59% of the time and his slider 36% of the time (he stopped throwing a curve in 2007) . This is the case even to left-hand batters, to whom he still throws his change up under 10% of the time and throws his slider over 30% of the time. For a right-handed starter is this is a very high percentage, maybe one of the highest in the league, for slider use to left-handed batters.
I think this is a big part of the reason he throws so far inside to left-handed batters. Sliders have glove-side movement compared to fastballs, so from right-handed pitchers they move away to right-hand batters and in to left-handed batters. Thus from a right-handed pitcher they often end up inside to left-handed batters. Since Santana throws more sliders to left-handed batters than the almost any right-handed pitcher he will tend to throw more inside pitches. And his sliders are even more inside than the average right-handed pitcher's:

So Santana is throwing sliders to left-handed batters much more than other right-handed batters do and throwing them even farther inside than others do. Most right-handed pitchers throw fastballs and change ups to left-handed batters and when they do they throw them outside. Santana throws his share of fastballs to left-handed batters, but when he does he throws them slightly more inside than average:

When you add up all these parts — fastball not as extremely outside as other RHPs, lots of inside sliders rather than outside change ups — you get Santana's extreme inside pitches to left-handed batters. But does it work? What are Santana's numbers against LHBs like?
Santana has averaged a 4.7 FIP against lefties versus a 3.94 FIP against righties — a pretty reasonable platoon split and generally an okay performance against lefties. Also his slider is better against lefties than his change is, getting more whiffs (17% versus 10%), more out-of-zone swings (35% versus 24%), fewer in-zone swings (53% versus 72%), and a lower slugging on balls in play (.583 versus .626). So given what he has to work with it looks like Santana is right to go with his inside slider against LHBs so much over his change. And as a result of this he is the only pitcher whose pitches on average end up on the inside half of the plate to left-handed batters.

Diamond on the Mound
Chelsea Baker donated her perfect game jersey to the Hall of Fame on Monday
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. ? When Chelsea Baker looks around the field this week, the diamond will look the same, but her teammates will not.
Baker, a 13-year-old baseball phenom, is playing for the first time with a new team called the Sparks ? made up of girls from all over the country ? at Cooperstown Dreams Park this week, instead of her usual male teammates.
She has noticed a difference already, and although she thinks she talks more to her female teammates, "the boys root for me too," she said.
And why wouldn't they. On Monday, she stopped at the Baseball Hall of Fame to donate a jersey she wore on April 9, 2010, to pitch her second perfect game in less than a year for her Plant City, Fla., Little League baseball team.
"This donation is just the latest way of showing that baseball is an equal opportunity employer. Size doesn't matter, it is heart that matters most," said Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson, who accepted the jersey on behalf of the Museum. "Women are an important part of the game and an important part of baseball history and we are honored that Chelsea thought of us and is willing to donate her jersey."
One of the reasons for Baker's incredible success is a knuckleball taught to her by the late Joe Niekro, a successful Major League pitcher and brother of Hall of Fame knuckleballer Phil Niekro.
Joe Niekro taught Baker the tricky pitch shortly before he passed away in 2006, when Baker was only 8-years-old.
"I think he would have been amazed, and he would have been so proud of me," Baker said.
Baker was the only girl in her league and finished with a 12-0 record on the mound for the 2010 season. Her team finished 29-1. She also has two grand slams to her credit at the plate.
Her new team, the Sparks, is an all-girls touring baseball team that is part of the Baseball For All organization. Her teammates joined her at the Hall of Fame for Monday's donation, and her jersey will now be on display for Cooperstown visitors to see, as part of baseball history.
"It's been an honor and a privilege being here," Baker said. "This is really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

- Ceremonial first pitch ball from Game 4, delivered by former President George W. Bush and former President George H.W. Bush, signed by both men.
- Dirt taken from around the pitching mound following Game 3 at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington to mark the first World Series game in North Texas history.
The 2010 World Series exhibit in Autumn Glory will be on display through the 2011 Major League Baseball postseason. Entrance to the Autumn Glory exhibit is included with Museum admission.
For images of the Autumn Glory exhibit, please call Hall of Fame Director of Communications Craig Muder at 607-547-0227.
The Museum collections contain many artifacts documenting the entire history of World Series and postseason play, including Don Larsen's cap and Yogi Berra's mitt from Larsen's 1956 perfect game; Bill Mazeroski's (1960) and Joe Carter's (1993) bats from their Series-ending blasts; and World Series rings from the last century of Fall Classic competition.
The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is open seven days a week year round, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. The Museum observes regular hours of 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. from Labor Day until Memorial Day Weekend. From Memorial Day through the day before Labor Day, the Museum is open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Ticket prices are $16.50 for adults (13 and over), $11 for seniors (65 and over) and for those holding current memberships in the VFW, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and AMVets organizations, and $6 for juniors (ages 7-12). Early team shot of Ruth?s Red Sox donated to Hall of Fame collection
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. ? Babe Ruth spent his first full season with the Boston Red Sox in 1915. By Sept. 30 of that year, the team had clinched the league title and was set to play a series at the end of the regular season at Polo Grounds in New York.
Five days later on Oct. 5, the team posed for a photo on the foul line before a doubleheader against the Yankees. And thanks to a group of generous donors, that panoramic photo of a 20-year-old Ruth is now in the collection at the Baseball Hall of Fame.
David Maroney and Joseph Wassick, members of the Elks Lodge of Bennington, Vt., brought their wives and Maroney?s 7-year-old grandson to make the donation on Friday in Cooperstown. The donation was made with the support of the Elks Lodge Trustees as well as the entire membership.
?The photo hung in the lodge for as long as we can remember, and we think it was donated to us in the 1930s by a man named Shipwreck Kelley,? said Maroney, who only had a small hand-written donation card for information about it.
?I?ve been a member 55 years and I don?t ever remember not seeing it,? said Wassick, a trustee at the lodge. ?We think we?ve narrowed it down to a Kelley who was a member and the gentleman died in 1938, but we can?t be sure.?
The photo hung in a dark game room in the lodge ? which probably helped preserve its condition ? until 2004 when the Red Sox won the World Series and it began to draw more attention.
?It was always in an obscure area because we didn?t know anything about it,? said Maroney. ?Then in 2004, a member had it reframed and displayed more prominently.?
One Elks member called into a talk radio show in 2006 for advice on how to get information about it and the host advised them to take it to Cooperstown.
?It took us five years to get here, but it?s here,? said Wassick.
?We were not intending to donate it at first, but find out what it was,? said Maroney. ?But once we left, we felt that this is where it belonged.?
The large panoramic photo features a wealth of baseball history, including Hall of Famers Tris Speaker, Herb Pennock and Harry Hopper, and other notable players Smokey Joe Wood ? who won a league-leading 34 games in 1912, Ernie Shore ? who combined on a no-hitter with Ruth in 1917, and Carl Mays ? who once hit a batter in the head with his submarine pitch, causing his death.
?It is not often that someone comes forward with such an important piece, with such an important player like Ruth and in such great condition,? said Erik Strohl, senior director of exhibits and collections for the Hall of Fame. ?We are really grateful.?
The collections of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is home to over 500,000 photos, stored in temperature and humidity controlled facilities.
?When we accept a donation, we promise to take care of it forever,? said Strohl. ?This photo will be taken good care of.?
The Elk members needed no reassurance, because they know now that the photo will be available for millions of fans to see as they make their trek to Cooperstown.
?That?s why we brought it here,? Wassick said.
