One for the Books exhibit opens to rave reviews from fans, Hall of Famers

With three of the game's greatest players on hand, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum's newest exhibit, One for the Books: Baseball Records and the Stories Behind Them, opened to the public on Saturday.

Beforehand, a ribbon cutting took place in which Hall of Fame officials as well as enshrinees Joe Morgan, Phil Niekro and Cal Ripken Jr., a trio that combined played 67 big league seasons and had its share of records, joined in the festivities.

"It just blows your mind away when you come up here and see the names behind the records and the second guy and the third and the fourth," said Niekro minutes after the opening. "I've always said that records were made to be broken; some of them have and some of them will not be.

"Records, for me, really don't come into play as you're playing your career until you get right next to one, and all of a sudden it becomes real big."

As for those records that will never be broken, Niekro put Ripken's consecutive games played streak at the top of the list.

Nearby Niekro was Ripken, talking in front of an exhibit case that included a helmet, tickets and a scoresheet from the night when his amazing consecutive games played streak surpassed Lou Gehrig's.

"Once the streak was formed, I tried to keep the same exact approach to the game after that. I was resilient enough, I was healthy enough, mentally I was strong enough to do it, and the managers kept choosing me," Ripken said. "I don't look at the streak as an unbreakable record. If I could do it, certainly somebody else has that ability. And it happens not because you're obsessed with it but because you feel you should be coming to the ballpark ready to play. You should be trying to meet the challenges of each and every day. That's what a team does.

"Every body wants to fulfill a dream in whatever they do. Mine was to be a baseball player. You fulfill a dream by first making it, and then after you're in it you'd like to leave your mark in some way as a contribution to the sport," Ripken added. "Being celebrated here in this Hall of Fame exhibit is part of that mark. But I've got to tell you, it's surreal in many ways and almost seems like, 'Did that part of my life really happen? Did I play all those games?'"

Hall of Famer Joe Morgan celebrated the opening of One for the Books. (Milo Stewart Jr./National Baseball Hall of Fame Library)According to Morgan, he was both thrilled to be there and amazed by some of the numbers.

"I didn't realize that so many guys hit four home runs in a game. And I wasn't aware that a couple guys stole seven bases in a game. This just tells you about a lot of things that we just weren't aware of," Morgan said. "Honestly, I didn't realize I was second to (Hall of Famer) Eddie Collins as far as games played by a second baseman. There are a lot of things in here that are going to open people's eyes that they probably didn't know about. For me, already, it's been enlightening.

"You grow up and the numbers you remember are 714, 61, 56, but obviously some of those numbers have changed now, but Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak is still there," Morgan added. "I was with Pete Rose when he got to 44 consecutive games and I actually thought Pete was going to make it. When Pete set his sights on something, he usually accomplished it."

Thanks to the generosity of Presenting Sponsor Legendary Pictures, along with its founder Thomas Tull, the exhibit is the most interactive in the Museum's history ? featuring the Top Ten Tower, a database of records dating back to the game's infancy.

"This is truly awe-inspiring," Tull said. "The exhibit, when you hear the pitch, when you hear what it's going to be, it sounds really great, but it pales in comparison, frankly, to the presentation, the artifacts that are here, it's just truly awe-inspiring."

From Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson came only high praise for those that played a part in the institution's latest prize destination.

"When I first saw the exhibit, I thought how lucky are we to have the most professional, the most dedicated, the most outstanding staff I've worked with here at the Hall of Fame," Idelson said. "From the curators to the designers to the research team to the development office to raise the funds, to the maintenance staff that keeps it looking great, top to bottom, across the board, this staff knows how to put together a world class exhibit.

"And the exhibit truly captures the essence of what baseball records are all about. Not only are the artifacts there to tell the story, but the stories about those records are put into their proper historical context so you understand why records were set, how records were set, what the conditions were."

No Longer "Only the Lonely"

I wrote my first of more than 30 articles about Bert Blyleven nearly 91 months ago to the day. I titled it ?Only the Lonely: The Hall of Fame Trials and Tribulations of Bert Blyleven.? Only the Lonely was named after the 1960 song by Roy Orbison and was chosen because Blyleven was conspicuously missing from the Hall of Fame while all the pitchers ranked around him in several of the most important stats had already been inducted or were locks to be enshrined in their first year of eligibility.

Blyleven%20with%20George%20Brett%20in%20Front%20Row%20-%20Version%203.jpegWell, eight election cycles later and nobody can call Blyleven ?Only the Lonely? any longer. His vote totals steadily rose from 145 (29%) in 2003 to 463 (80%) in 2011, ultimately piercing the 75 percent threshold needed for election last January. While Blyleven was on the ballot far too long, his date with destiny finally arrived last Sunday when he was officially inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. My wife Barbara and I sat in the Blyleven family section during the ceremony as guests of Bert and his wife Gayle.

I can now say for the first time that the past seven-plus years have been worth every minute. I can also proclaim that the preceding seven-plus months have been joyous and memorable, highlighted by the telephone call I received from Bert informing me that he had been voted into the Hall of Fame 30 minutes before the official announcement was made to the public. He told me that I was his second call, directly after the one to his mother Jenny.

The excitement didn?t stop there though. In fact, it was a fun-tastic two weeks, culminating in a surprise trip to Fort Myers, Florida to meet Bert face-to-face for the first time at a tribute dinner in his honor. After giving each other a big, warm bear hug on stage, I recalled a story about a Saturday afternoon 38 years ago that found me umpiring behind home plate in a winter league scout?s game that the then 22-year-old veteran of four MLB seasons started.

I played catch with Bert and pitched in a fantasy camp game the next morning, followed by a round of golf with him at his club that afternoon. Our foursome tied for first place with a 65 in a scramble tournament. We played well and had a great time on the baseball field and the golf course.

While I may have been the ringleader, getting Blyleven elected to the Hall of Fame was truly a team effort and one that would have never gotten off the ground, if not for the Internet. Darren Viola (known to most of us as Repoz) of the Baseball Think Factory deserves credit for linking to and excerpting my articles, which did wonders for getting the message out in the early going. Alex Belth and Jon Weisman were also prominent linkers. Rob Neyer linked my articles and advocated on behalf of Blyleven. Even Bill James got behind Blyleven's candidacy in The Hardball Times Annual. Jay Jaffe continually endorsed him in his Hall of Fame evaluations at Baseball Prospectus. There were several other backers who chipped in over the years, too.

Importantly, dozens of high-profile writers, including Peter Gammons, Tracy Ringolsby, Ken Rosenthal, and Jim Caple, changed their minds along the way and began to not only vote for Blyleven but helped spread the word and influenced their fellow BBWAA members.

Make no mistake about it, Bert did all the work on the field. Fifth all-time in strikeouts, ninth all-time in shutouts, and top 20 since 1900 in wins. Two World Series championships coupled with a 5-1 record and 2.47 ERA in the postseason only added to his credentials. My job, if you will, was simply to make the voters aware of his accomplishments and qualifications. Lo and behold, Blyleven got his just reward in his 14th (and second-to-last) year on the ballot.

As one of 295 individuals with plaques in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Blyleven is no longer "Only the Lonely."

Plaque Caps

Roberto Alomar's Hall of Fame cap to have Blue Jays' logo; Bert Blyleven's will have Twins' logo

Museum News
Alomar (left) and Blyleven (right) will be inducted on July 24 in Cooperstown. (Milo Stewart Jr./National Baseball Hall of Fame Library)

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. ? A Hall of Fame career is not determined over one play, on season or one award. It is earned over a career of ten or more years of consistent excellence.

The bronze plaque in Cooperstown lists each team a player has played for during his career, but his cap shows the marks of the team with which he made his most indelible mark. For Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven in 2011, that will be the Toronto Blue Jays and Minnesota Twins.

"I will go into the Hall of Fame with a Blue Jays hat," said Alomar. "The first Blue Jay ever to go with a Blue Jay hat and I'm looking forward to it."

The choice of which team logo appears on a player's plaque is the Museum's decision, though the wishes of an inductee are always considered. As a history museum, it is important that the logo be emblematic of the historical accomplishments of that player's career.

For example, it would not be appropriate from an historical standpoint if Babe Ruth's cap had a Red Sox logo, if Ty Cobb's cap had a Philly A's logo, or if Hank Greenberg's had a Pirates logo.

"I want to thank all the teams I played for," said Blyleven. "I am proud to go into the Hall of Fame as a Minnesota Twin along with legends like Rod Carew, Harmon Killebrew and Kirby Puckett. It was a great ride for me, so many great ballclubs I played for and so many great moments."

Hall of Fame Welcomes 15 Millionth Visitor

Blue Jays fan from Ormstown, Quebec Has Been Hall of Fame Member since 2004

Museum News
From left: Jason Schiellack, Ken Gallinger, Robert Mahon, Nick Ross, Marc Brindle, Jeff Idelson (Craig Muder/National Baseball Hall of Fame Library)

COOPERSTOWN, NY ? Ken Gallinger has visited the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum regularly for the past 20 years. But when the Ormstown, Quebec, resident entered the Museum at 3:48 p.m. on Friday, his annual trip to Cooperstown became a part of Hall of Fame history.

Gallinger became the Museum's 15 millionth visitor since the Museum first opened its doors on June 12, 1939, when he entered with his Museum Membership card in hand, just days before the Museum's 72nd birthday.

"I was a little worried when I first came in and saw the folks waiting for me," Gallinger said. "I thought maybe I left my headlights on or something. But ? Wow! ? this is really cool."

Gallinger was greeted by Hall of Fame officials, including President Jeff Idelson, who presented him with a Membership upgrade to the President's Circle level. As a President's Circle Member, Gallinger will receive two tickets to the premium seating area for the July 24 Hall of Fame Induction. The longtime Toronto Blue Jays fan will be able to watch former Jays star Roberto Alomar and former Toronto general manager Pat Gillick receive their Hall of Fame plaques along with Bert Blyleven, the third member of the Class of 2011 at the Hall of Fame.

"My favorite player was Dave Stieb, but I'll always remember my first trip to the Hall of Fame for another Canadian team, the Montreal Expos," Gallinger said. "My first trip to the Museum was (July 28, 1991) ? the day Dennis Martinez of the Expos threw a perfect game. Obviously, you never forget something like that."

Gallinger visited the Museum on Friday with friends Marc Brindle of Mercier, Quebec; Nick Ross of Ormstown and Robert Mahon of Long Sault, Ontario ? which is located just over the Canadian border from New York State near Cornwall, Ontario. Gallinger is a native of Long Sault.

Dressed in a Jays pullover and fresh off a round of golf in Cooperstown, Gallinger was already making plans for his return trip to Cooperstown.

"We used to come to the Hall of Fame every year on Opening Day, but now we come a little later so we can play golf too," Gallinger said. "This is the best Museum in the world."

Gallinger is the first visitor from Canada to become a "millionth" visitor to the Hall of Fame. The complete list of millionth visitors includes:

Funeral and Memorial Plans

Harmon Killebrew was one of the most feared sluggers of his or any generation, and when he retired after the 1975 season, he had accumulated more home runs than any right-handed batter in the history of the American League.

He wasn't called "Killer" for nothing.

"If I was a pitcher, I would have been scared," said Killebrew's Twins teammate Tony Oliva. "Because whenever he was up, there was a chance the ball would disappear."

Off the field, however, the gentle giant was the antithesis of his nickname ? known around the globe for his kindness and charity.

Killebrew died Tuesday at the age of 74 in Scottsdale, Ariz., after a battle with esophageal cancer.

Born June 29, 1936 in the small town of Payette, Idaho, it was there, on the high school ball fields, that he was discovered by the Washington Senators. He was given a large signing bonus, and the "Bonus Baby" rule of the time required the 17-year-old to be kept with the major league team for at least two years, or the Senators would risk losing him to another club. It was because of this rule that Killebrew saw limited action, but once the Senators were able to send Killebrew to the minors in 1956, his growth as a player accelerated.

When Killebrew returned to the big leagues full time in 1959 at age 23, he had a breakout year as Washington's third baseman, cracking 42 home runs and knocking in 105 runs. Orioles manager Paul Richards marveled at his immense power and prestigious blasts, saying: "Killebrew can knock the ball out of any park, including Yellowstone."

From 1959- 1971, "Killer" put together eight- 40 home run and nine- 100 RBI seasons, was named to 13 All-Star teams (including two each in 1959 and 1961) and won the American League MVP Award (1969). Longtime Senators and Twins owner Calvin Griffith remarked "He hit home runs like few people can in the category of height and distance... Harmon didn't hit many line drive home runs. He would hit the ball so blooming high in the sky, they were like a rocket ship going up in the air.",

Harmon Killebrew was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1984. (National Baseball Hall of Fame Library)Teammate Bob Allison said of Killebrew: "Harmon has that graceful, fast swing, he swings up at the ball just a little bit and hits those high homers."

Griffith called him "The meal ticket for our franchise for all those years in Washington and Minnesota." Killebrew left the Twins at the conclusion of the 1974 campaign and on his first trip back to the Twin Cities in 1975, with his new team the Kansas City Royals, the Twins retired their beloved slugger's No. 3.

In 1984 Harmon Killebrew became the first member of the Minnesota Twins inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Upon receiving the honor he called it "the greatest thrill I've had in baseball."

Killebrew finished his 22-year big league career with 573 home runs and 1,584 RBI and was named an All-Star in 11 of his major league seasons. He finished in the top four of the American League Most Valuable Player voting six times and led the Twins to the postseason in three seasons. He led the AL in home runs six times, RBI three times and walks four times.

"Killer," however, was a reserved, kind and quiet man off the field. Once, when asked what he liked to do for fun, he replied "Well, I like to wash dishes, I guess."

Longtime Twins public relations representative Tom Mee once said of Harmon: "He is one of the finest individuals in the major leagues... to know Harmon Killebrew is to be a Killebrew fan."

Rich Reese called him former Twins teammate "One of the classiest people I've ever met in my life... He treated people with respect, even with the stature he had."

Of life, Harmon Killebrew said: "Life is precious and time is a key element. Let's make every moment count and help those who have a greater need than our own."

The Killebrew Family would like to thank fans for their generous outpouring of support and prayers for the late legend Harmon Killebrew. At this time, in lieu of flowers, the Killebrew family is urging fans to send donations to the Harmon Killebrew Foundation "Legacy Program" at P.O. Box 14550 Scottsdale, AZ 85267 or by visiting www.HarmonKillebrewFoundation.org.

The Harmon Killebrew Foundation is a nonprofit 501c3 dedicated to enriching the quality of life by promoting positive and healthful participation in sports, specifically baseball, by partnering with other 501c3 organizations to raise funds for their missions of promoting mental and physical health, education, self-sufficiency and community service.

Deconstructing Last Night's Most Amazing Moment: Scott Proctor's Faceplant [Video] (Deadspin)

Lots of wacky things are bound to happen in a 19-inning game, but I don't think anyone will be able to forget the lasting image of this morning's Pirates-Braves marathon: Scott Proctor tripping over his own feet while coming out of the batters box. Thankfully MLB.com was all over the replays on this one , recognizing Proctor's gaffe for the historic moment it was. Can't wait to see what...

Major trip for minor leaguers

Phillies Triple-A team, led by manager Ryne Sandberg, visits Hall of Fame

Museum News
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs and their manager Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg (top far left) visited the Hall of Fame Wednesday. (Milo Stewart Jr./Hall of Fame)

COOPERTSOWN, N.Y. ? Led by a member of the national pastime's most exclusive fraternity, almost two dozen Lehigh Valley IronPigs could be found roaming the corridors of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum on Wednesday afternoon, awed by their historic surroundings.

Arriving via bus from their home in Allentown, Pa., members of the Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies spent an off-day, on their way to a game in Pawtucket, R.I., gazing at exhibits, checking out the artifacts, and overall just enjoying the experience of visiting the game's most hallowed grounds. And at the forefront was the squad's skipper, Ryne Sandberg, whose bronze image the players made sure to find in the Plaque Gallery.

"This was a generous opportunity presented by the Philadelphia Phillies, who as an organization are going to bring one of their affiliates to Cooperstown each of the next five years," a casually dressed Sandberg said midway through his visit. "So we're the first team to do that, and for me to be their guide today, with a great bunch of guys that I already like, I just felt like they'd take right to this.

"Some have been here before and really enjoyed it, but for those who hadn't I thought it would be a treat that would last a lifetime. Not only will it affect them today but probably for the rest of their lives."

Sandberg, elected to the Hall of Fame in 2005, originally drafted by the Phillies and in his first season managing the IronPigs after having spent the previous four years as a skipper in the Chicago Cubs' minor league system, said he still enjoys every opportunity he gets to visit the Museum.

"It's still mind-boggling to me to think this game has been going on for so long," Sandberg said. "For me, I like to picture back to the person who was wearing a certain glove - what was their life like, what did they do on a daily basis, what kind of work did they do in the off-season, where did they live, what were the conditions? I put myself back in history that way the best I can, trying to picture myself back then. It's all about the history for me and going back in time."

A 10-time All-Star second baseman, Sandberg won nine Gold Glove Awards and seven Silver Slugger Awards during a 16-year big league career spent mainly with the Cubs. At the time of his retirement, his 277 home runs as a second baseman were a big league record.

"I've been doing this since I was 18 years old. When I signed my name to that first professional baseball contract I became a professional baseball player," Sandberg said. "To spend all those years in the game, I have an appreciation for what this game stands for. Going into the Hall of Fame in 2005 really was a time of reflection for me that year, thinking of all the people that helped me and all the trials and tribulations that I went through to have a career.

"And now I have a feeling of wanting to help younger players and any player get to the major leagues. I know the benefits from it, not only financial but just the experience of being part of a team and being part of history in this country."

Having walked amongst the fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, and grandmothers and grandfathers who visited the Hall of Fame on Wednesday, Sandberg talked about the ability that the game of baseball has in connecting generations.

"It is a sport that you can enjoy with a simple game of catch," he said. "You can go to a baseball game and the game hasn't changed over the years. It's still the same dimensions on a baseball field. And just the fact that it's been a constant through so many years and generations.

"I think that people connecting with the game through generations has helped it become America's pastime."

Ballparks only part of the problem for Florida's MLB teams

On one of the broadcasts from the All-Star festivities last week, there was a trivia question posed to the viewers. Which two current teams have never hosted an All-Star Game?

The answers: The Rays and Marlins. Guess what else they have in common? Their state, and their abysmal attendance figures. That's no coincidence.

...

Loving Baseball

Joe Posnanski took a weeklong, cross-country trip that covered five cities and more than 10,000 miles in search of what baseball means in 2011. He traveled from Charlotte to Los Angeles and chatted with Vin Scully, from L.A. to New York to witness Derek Jeter's 3000th hit, from N.Y. to Kansas City to watch a game with Bill James in which Justin Verlander's 100-mph heat was topped by the temperature, from K.C. to Phoenix to catch Prince Fielder "uncoil his wonderfully violent swing" at the All-Star Game, and from Arizona to Cooperstown where a bat stored in the archives "down in the bowels of the Hall of Fame" that stuck with him the most. Yes, Wonderboy, the bat Roy Hobbs made from a tree split in half by lightning in the movie The Natural that reminded both Hobbs and Posnanski of their fathers.

THE BAT stays with me. Isn't that strange? I did so many amazing things on this crazy cross-country trip in search of what baseball means in 2011 ...

And so ... why the bat? Why does the bat keep reemerging in my mind, like a summer song that won't stop repeating? It's just a bat. It might not even be regulation size. No one used it to crack his 3,000th hit or smack his 500th homer. This bat was never even used in a major league game, or a minor league game, or a Little League game, or any real game at all.

Still ... Why do I think it's all about that bat?

"Loving Baseball" is Joe at his best. In addition to Scully, Jeter, James, Verlander, Fielder, and Hobbs, Posnanski marvels at the artistry of Adrian Gonzalez's swing, and mentions, in order, Cy Young, Sliding Billy Hamilton, Andre Ethier, Kirk Gibson, Roger Clemens, Willie Mays, Andrew McCutchen, Lance Berkman, Roy Halladay, David Ortiz, Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Roger Maris, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Honus Wagner, Robin Yount, Cal Ripken Jr., Ichiro Suzuki, Sandy Koufax, Walter Johnson, Brayan Pena, Gary Sheffield, Roberto Clemente, Johnny Bench, Ozzie Smith, Greg Maddux, Danny Jackson, Jose Bautista, Pete Rose, Jimmie Foxx, Al Kaline, Tony Gwynn, Harmon Killebrew, Lew Burdette, Ralph Terry, and Bill Mazeroski.

So why is it that as I end this trip, I keep thinking about Wonderboy?

...What was I looking for? While in Los Angeles, I heard the awful news about Shannon Stone, a Texas firefighter who brought his son to a Rangers game and fell and died when he lost his balance trying to catch a baseball. In New York, I saw a young man named Christian Lopez grab Derek Jeter's 3,000th hit and then saw his father, Raul, cover him as protection from the crowd. In Arizona, I saw the determined look on Jose Cano's face as he pitched to his son Robinson in the Home Run Derby.

And in Cooperstown, I saw Wonderboy?the bat a boy carved to remind himself of his father. My father worked for most of his life in a sweater factory. When he got home each day?oil on his pants, salami on his breath?we would go to the backyard and play catch. All the while he talked: Get in front of the ball... . Put the glove under your mattress to break it in... . Don't step into the bucket... . Watch how Henry Aaron steps into the ball... . Choke up on the bat with two strikes... . Get back to your feet quickly, like Brooks Robinson... . Remember, it's easier to run in on the ball than to go back.

"They're sending you around to the country to find the meaning of baseball?" he asked.

"Something like that," I said. He looked at me with a mix of disbelief and wonder and, sure, pride. Dad's job was to keep the sweater machines running. It was a clear assignment with a clear mission?plain questions and plain answers and no time for what he always called "baloney."

"Well, baseball is fun, right?" he said.

Baseball is fun indeed.

As the subtitle of the Sports Illustrated article dated July 25, 2011 asks and answers, "What keeps the grand game great? Everything old is new again."

The Declaration of Independents

Thanks to Google Alerts, I was made aware of an interview conducted by David Mark, a senior editor at POLITICO, with Nick Gillespie and Matt Welch, the co-authors of The Declaration of Independents: How Libertarian Politics Can Fix What's Wrong with America in Arena Chat.

My Hall of Fame "campaign" for Bert Blyleven was the subject of part of their conversation. Check out the 10-minute video and accompanying article. If you're pressed for time, fast forward to 3:30 and play it through the 7:00 mark.

Baseball fans, for example, may recall Bert Blyleven, a solid and durable major league pitcher from 1970 to 1992. Hall of Fame baseball writers shunned Blyleven for years, never giving him more than 30 percent of their votes (75 percent are needed for entry to the baseball shrine.)

Then a California investment manager, Rich Lederer, took up Blyleven?s cause.

?By penning a series of convincing articles and debating individual voting writers (face-to-face, in many cases), this outside dabbler pulled off the unthinkable: he changed a doomed candidate into a 2011 inductee into the Hall of Fame,? Gillespie and Welch write.

?It shows that you can move around the traditional gatekeepers and centers of power,? Welch said.

Welch, who is the editor-in-chief of Reason magazine, a leading libertarian publication, is perhaps better known around these parts as a diehard Angels fan, astute sabermetrician, and part-time baseball writer. It's hard to believe that his outstanding guest column at Baseball Analysts on Dave Hansen is now more than six years old. Be sure to check out the accompanying photo of Welch singing and Hansen jamming on guitar.

Matt and I grew up on the same block in the Lakewood Village area of Long Beach. While an age difference separated us, our brothers played on the same Little League team, which was coached by Mr. Welch. Unaware that I was the Rich Lederer from his childhood years, Matt linked to my website in 2004, then interviewed me for his inaugural "Infrequently Asked Questions" series in 2005 after discovering that we were not only neighbors but fellow bloggers with a passion for baseball and the Bill James Baseball Abstracts. Most recently, Welch wrote "How a Part-Time Blogger Changed the Face of Baseball's Hall of Fame."

Courtesy of Google Books, here is an excerpt from The Declaration of Independents in a chapter titled "The Democratization of Just About Everything...":

Fred Eckhardt is living proof that the American tradition of impactful pamphleteer activism is more than alive and well. Four decades after publication of the Treatise, it has never been easier for self-publishers and other outsiders to build their own seats at the table and elbow the deadweight aside, forcing the top-down cultures of industrial media (and politics and music and beer and a thousand other sectors) to confront their own banal inadequacies and acknowledge (only after kicking and screaming) the newcomers' contributions. Forget Bill James and pollster Nate Silver—consider the case of Rich Lederer, an investment manager by day and sabermetrics dabbler by night at his Baseball Analysts website.

Lederer, beginning in December 2003, spearheaded a one-man campaign to convince the famously stubborn and insular Baseball Writers' Association of America to elect underappreciated 1970s pitching great Bert Blyleven to the Hall of Fame. At the time, Blyleven had never received more than 30 percent of the vote (you need 75 percent to get in). By penning a series of convincing articles and debating individual voting writers (face-to-face, in many cases), this outside dabbler pulled off the unthinkable: He changed a doomed candidate into a 2011 inductee into the Hall of Fame. In a conference call with reporters after his January induction, Blyleven went out of his way to repeatedly thank Lederer, a California investment banker whom he had never met.

Irrespective of your political interests or leanings, I believe you will enjoy The Declaration of Independents. The book is as much about decentralization and democratization taking market share from "the forces of control and centralization" as anything else, and it has applications beyond politics.
